Alexander Gent (BSc)

Introduction

I am a highly-experienced online private mathematics tutor specialising in A-Level/IB, GCSE/IGCSE and KS3 Mathematics. I am extremely familiar with all major exam boards such as Edexcel, OCR (+MEI), AQA, CIE, WJEC etc. I also provide assistance with the Junior and Intermediate UKMT Maths Challenges - a number of my previous students advanced to the prestigious Olympiad (only the top 1,200 students in the UK are selected)

Experience

For almost a decade now, I have been a full-time private tutor and greatly enjoy my work. I have had plenty of time to learn how to adapt my approach over the years having taught a wide variety of students - those who have a strong disliking of maths and need that boost in confidence, or those who are pursuing the highest grades/outstanding CV and want to develop their mathematical skill even further. For me, the number one thing is making the student feel comfortable about learning mathematics and enjoy the experience!

I have assisted a large number of students with securing first-choice university offers at some of the top institutions in the world such as Oxford/Cambridge/Imperial College London, as well as many Russell Group universities. I am always happy to support tutees with UCAS applications - whether it’s reading through statements and providing feedback, or acting as a referee (for those who are re-sitting).

My tuition also extends beyond the UK to international students who are taking the IGCSE or IB exams, increasingly teaching students from all across Europe and Asia.

Qualifications/Certifications/Awards

  • 1st Class Honours in Mathematics (BSc), University of York (2018)

  • Enhanced DBS Certificate

  • A*s in A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Langley Park School for Boys (2015)

  • Scade Community Service Trophy (for 2 years of voluntary mathematics classes given to KS2 students of Hawes Down Junior School) (2015)

  • A* in GCSE Mathematics, Langley Park School for Boys (2013)

Tuition Style

My tutoring style can be described as well-organised, professional, calm, enthusiastic, reliable and patient (please see the review page). I believe it is important to make sure that parents remain well-informed about progress with weekly feedback, and to set tailor-made assignments every week to make sure that the tutee can cement ideas learnt in our sessions.

These days, I conduct all lessons online. I've invested in the equipment to be able to carry out sessions smoothly - all my tutees need is a laptop, internet connection, and, if beneficial, a graphics tablet to write on screen. I send a link to an online blackboard before the first session, and this link will be used every time. Here, the video call will also take place so there is no need to set up a Zoom/Meet account. All the notes made in the lesson will remain on this link so that they can be referred back to at any point, which is incredibly useful since everything is all in one place.

Please feel free to drop me a message (via the contact page) to discuss any further details you may require, and to schedule a regular weekly time slot. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • "Without question, Alex is the best A Level tutor that my daughter has had in any subject. By identifying any weak areas and formulating a structured plan of attack, test papers are all A* grade as opposed to a B when they first started working together. As a parent you get a weekly email update and I cannot recommend him highly enough. More importantly, my daughter found him very easy to work with and we have found that isn’t always the case."

    - Phil, parent of A-Level student

  • "Before we starting using Alex, my son had been given a guidance grade of C. From the outset Alex was the most inspiring and organised tutor I’ve ever dealt with. His sessions were hugely beneficial to my son and he produced mock papers to target specific difficulties. My son achieved an A in his A levels💪 Thank you Alex!"

    - Nicola, parent of A-Level student

  • "Alex is excellent. Our somewhat lacking in confidence maths student son has, under Alex's tutelage, moved to the top set. Highly recommend. I'm in particular impressed with Alex's follow up in setting appropriate but suitably challenging follow up exercises each week."

    - John, parent of GCSE student

  • "Alex is just amazing and I cannot recommend him highly enough. He is possibly the most patient man I have ever known and that was definitely needed for tutoring my ADHD son through his GCSE maths! So thank you Alex! You made our lives much easier!"
